Albany, NY--The Sage Colleges' department of athletics recently honored members of the varsity teams at the Athletic Awards Banquet. Senior Alex Cabrera (Kingston, NY/Kingston), a member of the men's tennis team at Sage was named the recipient of the Gator Award as the team's Most Valuable Player.         

Head men's tennis coach Bruce Perry said of Cabrera, "Alex's devotion and endurance in representing Sage men's tennis is unquestioned." Perry added, "Sage's men's tennis program owes him many thanks for his hard work during his career."

Alex was a three-year letterwinner with the young Gators and served as the team's captain this spring. A law and society major at Sage, he served as President of Sage's Student Government in 2009-2010 and was a member of Sage's first men's tennis team in 2009.

Senior Dylan Spring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia), a member of the men's tennis team at Sage was named the recipient of the Coaches' Award for his contributions to the team both on and off the courts this season.           

Perry said of Spring, "Dylan kept a steady hand on showing the team how to compete at a high-level." Perry noted, "His leadership helped us win the Skyline Conference Sportsmanship Award."

Spring was a newcomer to the program this year. He opened his career as a Gator earning a spot on the Skyline Conference Men's Tennis Weekly Honor Roll in the opening week after a strong performance against Green Mountain College, where he won his singles and teamed with Alex Cabrera for a win at No. 1 doubles. He is a Dean's List student and majoring in business administration at Sage.

Freshman Rob Hansen (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), a member of the men's tennis team at Sage was named the recipient of the Rookie of the Year Award for his contributions to the team both on and off the courts this season.          

Perry said of Hansen, "Rob was a pleasant surprise to our team this season!" Perry added, "His willingness and desire to compete at the No. 2 position as a rookie is an indicator of his strong character."

Hansen added to the Sage lineup this year, playing mostly at No. 2 singles and teaming with Alex Cabrera at No. 1 doubles for nine matches.

Perry's team was named the recipient of the 2012 Skyline Conference Sportsmanship Award. The players and coaching staff received acclaim from the league's coaches for the manner in which they conducted themselves over the courts of the season. For the year, the Gators went 0-11 overall with an 0-6 record in the competitive Skyline Conference.
