Gators' season ends in OT thriller to Alfred

Albany, NY—Sage's men's soccer team hosted the Saxons of Alfred University on Wednesday night in the Empire 8 Semifinals. The contest pitted the No. 2 seeded Gators against third seeded Alfred in Sage's first home Empire 8 playoff contest since joining the league three years ago.

The two teams played to a scoreless finish in regulation despite Sage's dominance on the shots, 24-11. Headed to overtime, the Saxons made a run as sophomore Winston Thomas (Rochester, NY/University Prep) had a shot at 93:26 which was blocked and set up the corner for Alfred. Junior forward Zachary Gloskin (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) fired the service into the area in front of the goal from the right side and Thomas picked up the loose ball for the eventual game-winner at the 94:03 mark. The goal was the first of the year for Thomas as the Saxons picked up the program's first Empire 8 post-season win in the process.

Alfred advances to the 2019 Empire 8 Championship which will take place at top seeded Nazareth College on November 9. Alfred is making the program's third appearance in the finals having previously advanced on penalty kicks on two other occasions. The win puts Alfred at 8-11, while Sage finishes the year at 9-9.

Sage had their scoring opportunities as sophomore Kevin Winglosky (Schodack, NY/Ichabod Crane) had a shot off the right side to the inside post but Alfred's rookie keeper Jon Nadolne (Port Washington, NY/Schreiber) came up with the save.  With 4:45 left in regulation, Winglosky had another opportunity but was unable to find the net as he was stymied.

For the game, Nadolne made seven saves in earning the win and stands at 4-3 in goal. Sage's sophomore goalkeeper Lucas Bourdeau (Castleton-on-Hudson, NY/Maple Hill) made four saves in taking the loss finishing the season at 9-9.
