Gators drop 1-0 match-up to Manhattanville on opening day

Albany, NY—The Sage Colleges' men's soccer team opened the 2018 season on Friday afternoon hosting the Valiants of Manhattanville College in a non-conference match-up. The contest pitted Sage's head men's soccer coach Keith Simons, a 2010 graduate of Manhattanville against his alma mater.

At the half, Manhattanville held a 1-0 lead as rookie midfielder Cody LaCava (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) scored his first career goal on a feed from sophomore Marius Nicolaysen (Oslo, Norway) at 15:12 as they had a break away down the left side of the field and were able to put the ball past Sage's senior keeper Michael Chiaravalloti (Torrington, CT/Oliver Wolcott) to the right side of the net.

Despite several chances in the second half, Sage was unable to get anything past the hands of rookie keeper Charles Roberts (Browns Mills, NJ/Pemberton Township) who picked up the shutout win in the match. He made nine saves in the contest, while Sage's Chiaravalloti suffered the loss with four saves and one goal allowed.

Sage returns to action on Tuesday, September 4 hosting SUNY-Plattsburgh at ACP Field at 7 p.m., while Manhattanville returns to the pitch on September 5 at Vassar in a 4 p.m. match-up.
