Zayas scores twice, but Gators fall at Stevens

Hoboken, NJ- Sage's men's soccer team travelled to New Jersey to meet the Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday in an Empire 8 match. The game went to Stevens 4-2 after the Ducks scored four second half goals. With the win, Stevens is now 7-4-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the Empire 8. The loss snaps the Gators' five-game win streak and sends Sage to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in the Empire 8. Saturday's contest marked the 150th men's soccer game for the Gators after adding men's soccer as a varsity sport in 2010.

Senior Derlis Zayas (White Plains, NY/White Plains) gave Sage the early lead with his first goal of the afternoon at 25:14 as senior Paul Reynoso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) assisted. Sage held the 1-0 lead at the break before Haddy Abdelhady tied the action at 51:55.

Derlis scored again at 54:05 on a pass from seniors Kevin Saar (Binghamton, NY/Windsor Central) and Heriberto Gomez (Columbiaville, NY/Ichabod Crane) and gave Sage a 2-1 lead. On the season, Zayas is the second leading scorer with 16 points on 6 goals and 4 assists. Overall on his Sage career, he now boasts 43 points on 17 goals with 9 assists and is sixth in career points. Reynoso now has 13 career assists and is tied for third all-time in assists, while ranking eighth in career points with 29.

For Steven, Nikolai Figueroa headed in a ball off a corner kick at 57:25 from Kevin Brito to tie the game again. Back to back goals from Andrew Masur at 76:03 and Jimmy Doran at 85:55 put the Ducks in the driver's seat as they held a 4-2 lead.

Gator junior keeper Michael Chiaravalloti's (Torrington, CT/Oliver Wolcott) shared time in goal with rookie Jonathan Allen (Fort Ann, NY/Fort Ann).

Next up for the Gators, they will host SUNY-Cobleskill in a 7 p.m. nonconference game at ACP's Field on Oct. 11.
