Zayas leads Gators to third straight win as they top MCLA, 6-1

North Adams, MA- Sage's men's soccer team travelled to Massachusetts on Tuesday evening for a non-conference match-up with the Trailblazers of MCLA and triumphed, 6-1. Senior forward Derlis Zayas (White Plains, NY/White Plains) had a banner evening as he led the team to their third straight victory as Sage improves to 5-3 overall. With the loss, MCLA drops to 2-7.

Sage led 3-0 at the half as Zayas had five points in the first half on two goals and an assist. Zayas scored first at 31:09 on a feed from junior forward River Seybolt (Selden, NY/Longwood) at 31:09. Less than three minutes later the pair connected again, this time Seybolt on the score from Zayas at 33:53 to give the Gators as 2-0 lead.  Just before the half, Zayas scored on a pass from senior midfielder Heriberto Gomez (Columbiaville, NY/Ichabod Crane) at 40:39.

Rookie forward Griffin Goodmote (Broadalbin, NY/Broadalbin Perth) collected his first collegiate goal as he gave Sage a 4-0 lead with his goal at the 67:52 mark. He found the net again with a goal at 85:44. Sophomore Eduardo Angel (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) wrapped the Sage scoring with his goal at 88:56 on a feed from rookie Jeaneste Pierre (Newburgh, NY\/Newburgh Free Academy) helping Sage to the largest scoring output thus far on the 2017 season.

MCLA broke up the Gators' shutout bid as Matthew Bluteau scored at 83:12 putting the Trailblazers on the scoreboard, collecting his first score of the season.

Seybolt leads the Gators with his 20 points on 10 goals and two assists. He continues his climb on the program's all-time scoring list as he moved into the No. 2 spot in career points with 73 on 33 goals and nine assists. He is currently No. 2 all—time in career points with 73, just nine behind Gustavo Trinidad (2011-2014, 25 goals, 32 assists), while edging ever closer to being the Gators' all-time goal scorer as well. Scott Jarosz (2010-2013, 72 points) is the program's all-time goal scoring leader with 35 goals. Zayas is also making his run on the all-time scoring list as well as he moved from the No. 7 spot prior to the match to the No. 6 spot after moving past Wesley Finch (2010-2011, 16g, 7a, 37 points) as he now boasts (39) points.

Gator junior keeper Michael Chiaravalloti's (Torrington, CT/Oliver Wolcott) collected the win and now has three shutouts on the season after he made two saves in the contest. Rookie keeper Jonathan Allen (Fort Ann, NY/Fort Ann) played the last ten minutes, yielding a goal in his time in the net.

Next up for the Gators, they will host St. John Fisher College in the program's first home Empire 8 contest. The day is a Sage soccer doubleheader as both the women's and men's team will host the Cardinals in Empire 8 play on Saturday at Albany College of Pharmacy's Athletic Complex as the women's match is first at 1 p.m. and the men's match follows at 4 p.m. as the Gators will host their Coaches vs. Cancer games and will be raising funds for the American Cancer Society.
