Union Edges Past Sage 1-0

SCHENECTADY, NY – Sage fell to Union Saturday afternoon 1-0 in a tight nonconference game.

After Sarpong Adjei's (Bronx, NY/DeWitt Clinton) shot was blocked in the 6th minute, Union (2-0) went up 1-0 in the 10th minute when Mike Kaye scored his first goal of the season. The Dutchmen got off five unanswered shots until sophomore River Seybolt's (Seldon, NY/Longwood) shot was saved by John Weitzman just before halftime.

Sage's (0-1-1) Derlis Zayas (White Plains, NY/White Plains) got off two shots early in the second, but they were saved by Weitzman and the Union defense. After a shot on goal from Adgei in the 52nd minute, Paul Reynoso (Oswego, NY/Ray Bodley) ripped a shot five minutes later. Union responded with three shots over the next 19 minutes.

Freshman James Lagunas (Passaic, NY/Passaic County Technical) tried to tie the game for Sage in the 76th minutes, but it was blocked. The Gators kept the pressure on with two straight corner kicks, but no score materialized. Heriberto Gomez (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) hit a shot wide in the 81st minute, and Seybolt made a last second effort in the 89th minute, but both efforts came up short.

Weitzman (2-0) picked up the win on a six save effort while Sage's Caelan Kohut (Ancram, NY/Hudson) (0-1-1) picked up his first loss of the season on a three save effort. 

Sage was led offensively by Adjei, Zayas and Seybolt with two shots a piece while Union's Salvador Lopez Jr. had a game high four shots.

Sage hosts Cazenovia in their home opener at the Albany College of Pharmacy Athletic Complex on Tues. Sept., 6 at 4 p.m.
