Sage season closes in ECAC Semifinals

Albany, NY – The Sage Colleges' men's soccer team hosted the No. 8 seeded Pioneers of William Paterson University in the semifinals of the 2013 ECAC Men's Soccer Metro Tournament. Seeded No. 8 in the tournament, the Pioneers pulled off their second upset of the tournament after knocking off top-seeded Drew in their first match. On Saturday, WPU posted a 3-0 win over No. 4 seeded Sage to advance to the championship match on Sunday. WPI, 9-8-3 will face the winner of the other semifinal match yet to have been played between No. 2 Richard Stockton and No. 3 FDU-Florham. The championship will take place on the campus of FDU-Florham (Madison, NJ) with a 2 p.m. start on November 17.

WPU posted the first goal of the contest as sophomore Jose Arevalo (North Haledon, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep) connected for his seventh goal of the season at the 21:49 mark. Leading 1-0 at the break, WPU collected the second goal as junior back Marcus Hackett (Montclair, NJ/Immaculate Conception) was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick which he made beating Sage's sophomore keeper TJ Zehner (Beacon, NY/Beacon) at the 57:04 mark. The Pioneers tacked on a final insurance goal at 84:03 as sophomore midfielder Michael Conte (Franklin, NJ/Wallkill Valley Regional) converted the feed from junior midfielder Rafael Marques (Woodland Park, NJ/Passaic Valley Regional) for his second goal of the season.

Sage's Zehner took the loss with two goals allowed in 79:44 with seven saves, while Sage's senior Tim Madden (Watertown, NY/Watertown) played 10:16 with a goal allowed in the action. Madden finishes his stellar career with Sage's career records for most career saves (120), most career wins (14), and most games played in goal (32).

WPU's freshman keeper Mike Diacheysn (Nutley, NY/Nutley) made four saves in earning the win and his fourth shutout of the season for the Pioneers.
