Men's soccer announces first captains in program history

Albany, NY---The Sage Colleges men’s soccer team has announced the selection of the team’s 2011 captains, sophomore defenders Nick Mauro (Bristol, CT/Bristol Central) and Kevin Dommreis (Lagrangeville, NY/Millbrook). The talented pair were members of the first varsity men’s team at Sage as freshmen in 2010 and have provided guidance and leadership for the young squad.

Head Coach Kyle Clancy said of the pair, “Kevin and Nick have taken tremendous strides over the past year developing into leaders for this young team.” Clancy added, “They have shown this in their ability to get the job done both on and off the field as well as being a positive example for their teammates in regards to all aspects of this program. “

A defensive anchor as a rookie, Mauro started 16 games for Sage. He added one goal from his defensive position, but helped the team produce an impressive 1.29 goals per game average that led the league as the team yielding just 22 goals all season.

Dommreis was a 17-game starter for the squad last fall and helped anchor a stingy defensive unit that ranked among the league leaders. The team also ranked second in the conference with an impressive 1.26 goals against average.

For the season, Sage produced a 7-9-1 overall record with an fourth place finish in the Skyline Conference after going 6-3-1 in conference play. The team earned a bid to the league’s post-season tournament and hosted a quarterfinal game as a first-year program.

The 2011 team is off to an impressive start with a 3-0-1 record, while having connected on 10 goals already with one shutout and a 1.39 goals against average thus far.
