Gators play to a 2-2 draw, but drop in PK's

Utica, NY---The Sage Colleges men's soccer team was in action on Saturday afternoon at the Utica College Invitational. Sage faced Hunter College in the first round and the contest and the game ended as a 2-2 draw. Because of the tournament format a winner needed to be determined and Hunter was a 4-3 winner in penalty kicks. Sage is now 1-0-1 on the year, while Hunter stands at 0-1-1.

Sage led 1-0 when at 29:03 freshman Jose Miranda (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) found the net as he beat the goalie, Hunter's Zade Haobsh marking the first goal of his collegiate career. Hunter's Danny Vera tied the action when he was awarded a penalty kick at 36:00 and beat Sage's sophomore goalie Tim Madden (Watertown, NY/Watertown).

Miranda found a way to figure in the next scoring play as he fed sophomore midfielder Evan Southworth (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) off a free kick and Southworth headed it in at 37:37.

With less than three minutes left in regulation, the Hawks tied the score as Yong Kim scored at 97:05 tying the action at 2-2 after 90 minutes of regulation. The two teams played a pair of scoreless 10 minute overtime periods. The game officially ended as a tie, but in order to determine an advancing squad for the tournament was decided in penalty kicks.  

Sage returns to action on Sunday in the consolation match, starting at noon and will face Colby-Sawyer College. The host Pioneers from Utica College tallied a 4-0 win over Colby-Sawyer College to advance to Sunday's 3:00 p.m. championship game and will meet Hunter College.
