McGirr honored as men's lacrosse Gator of the Year

Albany, NY—Russell Sage College's department of athletics announced their award winners for the 2021-2022 academic year at the annual awards banquet.  In addition to several honors bestowed for athletic and academic excellence, Sage also selected the Gator of the Year Award for the department's 21 varsity sports for the 2021-2022 year.

RSC's junior midfielder Sean McGirr (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) was honored as the Gator of the Year in men's lacrosse.

Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Ryan Lanigan noted of McGirr, "As in many sports, lacrosse has specialized positions." He continued, "Midfield can be broken down even further. Most players play only one of those midfield specialties. Very rarely do lacrosse athletes perform two of those specialties at a high level. Our recipient this year played all four areas at a very high level because the team needed him to. He always rose to the occasion."

A midfielder with the Gators, he played in 15 games connecting for five points and helped to anchor the defensive midfield. Along the way, he was part of a lineup that surpassed 15 or more goals on five occasions and helped to record six wins. He tallied 33 ground ball pickups along the way with five caused turnovers and also won six faceoffs.
