Gators Fall to Western Connecticut in Season Opener

ALBANY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College returned to the field on a snowy afternoon to host Western Connecticut State this afternoon at ACP Stadium. The visiting Colonials outscored the Gators 6-1 in the second quarter on their way to a 17-5 non-conference victory.
Senior midfielder Shea Obado (Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood) (above) netted a pair of goals to lead the RSC attack. Sophomore midfielder Jake McElwee (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) and attackman Hunter Brunelle (Skaneateles, NY/Jordan-Elbridge), a grad student, each registered a goal and an assist, while senior goalie Michael Capitelli (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) stopped 12 WCSU shots.
Trailing 8-2 coming out of the break, Brunelle and McElwee scored 2:01 apart to get the Gators within four with 9:59 left in the third period. However, West Conn (1-0) scored three times in the final 1:47 of the frame to regain control.
Freshman attackman Julian Duque recorded six goals and an assist to lead the victors.
Looking ahead, RSC (0-1) plays next on Tuesday at 4:00 pm at Farmingdale State.
