Alfred wins Empire 8 men's lacrosse opener at Sage

Albany, NY— Noah Soriano scored seven goals and assisted on another to lead Alfred University to a 29-2 men's lacrosse victory at The Sage Colleges Sunday afternoon at ACP Field. The Saxons, 4-2 overall, won their league opener while the Gators played the program's first Empire 8 game and now stand 4-3.

Joe Fornataro score four goals and assisted on three scores for Alfred, while Patrick Brewer scored three and Frank Gavigan and Cale Donegan added two goals each. A total of 11 different Saxons had a goal each, and Anthony Ricottilli had two assists for the visitors. Fornataro had 12 shots and six on net while Soriano had 10 of his 11 shots on net. Gage Ponsetti made two saves in 30 minutes and Scott Kimiecik had a save in his 30 minutes in the Alfred net.

Freshman midfielder David Baraniuk (Budd Lake, NY/Mount Olive) and freshman attack Eric Fairhurst (Wooster, OH/Wooster) each scored for Sage and freshman attack Matt Fisher (Niskayuna, NY/Colonie) freshman midfielder Robert Martin (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) each had an assist. Freshman midfielder Reggie Dumas (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner) led the Gators with thee caused turnovers and freshman midfielder Shea Obado (Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood) had six ground balls. Martin now has 22 assists to lead the squad while Baraniuk has a team high 19 goals and Fairhurst's goal was his 15th.

Freshmen Brandon Maresca (Landing, NJ/Roxbury) made 14 saves in 30 minutes and freshman keeper Troy Schweitzer (Pittsfield, MA/Taconic) stopped six in the Sage goal.

Alfred had 73 shots and 65 ground balls while the Saxons won 28 of 35 face-offs and converted on four man-up goals. Sage had 32 ground balls and 15 shots for the day.

Sage hosts Castleton on Wednesday, March 27 at ACP Field at 7:30 p.m. This game was originally scheduled on March 7. Alfred hosts Hilbert Wednesday at 4 p.m.
