
SAGE MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYERS SWEEP EMPIRE 8 WEEKLY AWARDS
Hilton, NY — The Sage Colleges men's basketball team swept the Empire 8 weekly awards as the Gators produced the Player of the Week honors went to sophomore guard Jalon Borders (Bartow, FL/Bartow), while newcomer and sophomore forward Charles Davis (Bronx, NY/Fannie Lou Hamer) was saluted as the Empire 8 Rookie of the Week.
Sage is coming off a weekend with a pair of Empire 8 wins as Sage beat both Houghton College and the league's defending champions, Alfred University. The Gators are now 13-9 overall and 6-5 in the Empire 8.
Borders led Sage to a 2-0 week in conference play, averaging 24.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game, while shooting 69 percent from the floor. He began the week by scoring 24 points to go along with seven boards and four assists in a win over Houghton Saturday. On Sunday, Borders once again poured in 24 points on 11-of-15 shooting with nine rebounds and two steals in a 73-47 win over Alfred. Borders is fifth in the league in scoring, averaging 15.0 points per game in 2019-20.
A newcomer to the Gators this season, Davis helped Sage to a 2-0 week, averaging 18.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 63.6 percent from the floor and 80.0 percent from the foul line. On Sunday, Davis recorded 18 points and 10 boards off the bench to lift Sage past Alfred, while shooting 6-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the line. In addition, Davis added 18 points in a decisive win over Houghton Saturday.
Overall on the season, Borders has three double-doubles and leads the team in scoring with a 15.0 ppg average with 330 points in 22 starts. He has a 5.3 rpg average and leads Sage with 34 steals, while shooting 45.8% from the floor.
Davis, who missed last season with an injury, has started four of 21 games this year and has an 8.6 ppg average with a 4.7 rpg average with 21 blocks and 24 steals.
Sage returns to action Friday, February 14 for an Empire 8 game at St. John Fisher at 5:30 p.m. and will travel on Saturday, February 15 for a 2 p.m. contest at Nazareth College.
