Borders pours in 24 points as Sage beats Alfred, 73-47

Albany, NY — The Sage Colleges men's basketball team defeated Alfred University, the defending Empire 8 Champions, 73-47 Sunday afternoon at Kahl Gym. The Gators improved to 13-9 overall and 6-5 in the Empire 8, while the Saxons fell to 9-13 and 3-8 in league play.

Sophomore guard Jalon Borders (Bartow, FL/Bartow) scored a game high 24 points with nine rebounds, making 11 of his 15 shots. Sophomore forward Charles Davis (Bronx, NY/Fannie Lou Hamer) posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and made all six of his free throw attempts. Sophomore forward Jason Geronimo (Orlando, FL/Colonial) added seven points and Senior guard/forward Anthony Mitchell (Bronx, NY/Salesian) pulled down eight rebounds for the Gators and led the squad with four assists. Sage shot 39% but 49% in the second half when they added to their seven point lead at the half (33-26). The Gators posted 50 rebounds, 31 on the defensive end, while allowing 35. Sage gave up just eight offensive boards and had only six turnovers for the game while forcing 17.

Alfred was led by both junior guard Cole Eells (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) and senior guard Sam Dagon (Hornell, NY/Hornell). Both players scored 13 points, while Dagon made all of his four free throw attempts and added two assists. Sophomore forward Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) had a team best nine rebounds. Freshman forward Darren Miller (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse) scored six points and junior forward Jeremiah Zitz (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) added six rebounds. The Saxons shot 32% and had six blocks on the day.

Anthony Mitchell continues his climb in the Gator record book as he is 10th in scoring with 563 points, seventh in rebounding (357), fourth in assists (174) and seventh in blocks (45).

Sage hosts returns to action Friday, February 14 for an Empire 8 game at St. John Fisher at 5:30 p.m.  Alfred hosts Elmira in league play Friday at 5:30 p.m.
