Big second half leads Naz to 83-63 win at Sage

Albany, NY —Sage's men's basketball squad hosted Nazareth College in an Empire 8 contest on Friday night in Kahl Gym. The visiting Golden Flyers scored 48 second half points to post an 83-63 victory over the Gators. Sage is now 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the league while Nazareth improved to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Junior guard Stephen Gabel (Victor, NY/Fairport) led all players with game highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Gabel made 10 of his 15 shots and had seven rebounds on the defensive side. Junior guard Kevin Underwood (Canastota, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) scored 20 points and had four rebounds, making seven of his eight shots. Sophomore guard Zach Stenglein (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) scored 11 points and dished out a game best six assists for Nazareth, which had a 43-40 rebounding advantage and shot 53%, including 64% in the second half (18-28).

Sophomore guard Jalon Borders (Bartow, FL/Bartow) led the Gators with 14 points while sophomore guard Deonte Sherwood (Orange Park, FL/Oakleaf) scored nine points and led Sage with three assists. Sage senior guard/forward Anthony Mitchell (Bronx, NY/Salesian) added eight points. Sophomore forward Jason Geronimo (Orlando, FL/Colonial) led all Gators with nine rebounds. Sage shot 36% for the game and turned the ball over just eight times on the night.

Mitchell continues his climb in the Gator record book and is 11th in scoring with 519 points, third in steals (101), seventh in rebounding (324), fifth in assists (157) and seventh in blocks (40). Denmark is sixth in assists with 144, eighth in made three pointers with 70 and moved into ninth in games with 76.

Sage hosts St. John Fisher College on January 18 at 1 p.m. in an Empire 8 match-up in Kahl Gym. Nazareth travels to Utica College for a 2 p.m. Empire 8 contest with the Pioneers on Jan. 18.
