Sage men post 65-63 home win over Wildcats

SAGE MEN'S BASKETBALL TOPS SUNY-POLY, 65-63

Albany, NY—Sage's men's basketball team hosted SUNY-Poly on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest in Kahl Gym. Sage emerged with a 65-63 win to improve to 4-2, while the loss puts Poly at 2-2.

Sage led 36-33 at the half and in the second half led by as many as seven 46-39 with 13:21 left to play. The Wildcats stayed around and would turn the tables leading by 5 with 8:25 left to play (54-49). Sage tied the game at the 2:04 mark (63-63) as sophomore Deonte Sherwood (Orange Park, FL/Oakleaf) hit the first of two free throws. Sophomore forward Stuart Phair (Canberra, Australia/Tyler Christian School) hit a lay-up with 1:18 to give Sage a two-point lead that would hold up down the stretch for the win.

For the game, Phair added 12 points with seven rebounds, while Sherwood added 13 points off the bench with two assists. Senior captain Anthony Mitchell (Bronx, NY/Salesian) collected 13 points with five rebounds and three assists with a block and a steal. Senior guard Darius Denmark (Orlando, FL/Evans) racked up eight points with three assists and had a pair of three-point baskets.

SUNY-Poly's junior guard Caleb Canty (Hudson, NY/Hudson) added a game-best 17 points with four assists, a steal and four rebounds. Senior forward Tyshaun Copper (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Collegiate) finished with 14 point with five boards, while senior guard Jake Kulakowski (Brewerton, NY/Central Square) finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Junior forward Josh Gregory (Whitesboro, NY/Whietsboro) hauled in 12 rebounds, including 11 defensive boards with seven points for the Wildcats with three steals, two assists and a blocked shot.

For the game, Sage's Phair collected another double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, He added a pair of blocks with a 9-12 shooting performance from the floor. Borders collected 18 points for the Gators.

Senior captain Anthony Mitchell continues his push to moving into the Top 10 on the Gators career scoring list as he now has 472 points. He is currently seventh in career rebounding with 300 boards, while also ranking eighth with his 32 career blocked shots. Denmark is eighth with his 127 career assists, while also standing ninth with his 64 career threes after moving past Jeff Stopera (2009-2014) with 63 three pointers.

Sage is back in action on November 26 hosting RPI in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. in Kahl Gym. SUNY-Poly is back in action hosting Utica College on November 26 in a 4 p.m. non-conference contest.
