SAGE MEN'S BASKETBALL SELECTS ANTHONY MITCHELL TO SERVE AS TEAM CAPTAIN

Albany, NY—Sage's men's basketball team has selected senior Anthony Mitchell (Bronx, NY/Salesian) to serve as the 2019-2020 team captain.

Head men's basketball coach Brian Barnes commented on the selection on Mitchell, "The coaching staff is excited to announce that Anthony Mitchell has been selected to serve as our team captain." Barnes added, "Anthony was a unanimous selection from both his teammates and coaches.  Anthony brings a great attitude and work ethic every day and as a four-year player in our program, has the experience to help us reach our goals this season.  Our coaching staff is proud of Anthony and excited to work with him to reach his full potential as a leader.  

Entering his senior season, Mitchell boasts 414 career points with 260 rebounds in 61 games played with 39 starts. He has a 44.3% career field goal percentage with 28 career blocks. He is poised to become the 11th player to eclipse the 500 career point plateau this year, while standing 10th (183) in career field goals made, 10th in career rebounds (260), and will move into the top ten in games played as well.

As a rookie, he played in 17 games on the 2016-2017 teams, which finished the season as the Skyline Conference Runner-up. He averaged 2.3 ppg with 1.3 rpg as a Sage newcomer playing 5.7 minutes per games as well. As a sophomore, he started 17 of 25 games played and poured in a personal-best 209 points. Mitchell finished the year with an 8.4 ppg average and added 5.3 rpg.  He also shot 40.3% from the floor, converting 89-of-221 field goals in 2017-2018 year. He handed out 56 assists with a team-best 51 steals as a sophomore.

As a junior, Mitchell started 22 of 24 games played. He added 8.2 ppg with 5.3 rpg on the 2018-2019 campaign. He led the Gators with 19 blocked shots last season as well as being the team's high scorer twice and the high rebounder twice. His personal-best scoring effort is 19 points which he had against Hartwick (1/30/18), while three times ha had hauled in 10 rebounds during his career. He has also had 8 assists twice at Sage.

He is majoring in accounting at Sage and was named to the Sage Scholar-Athlete Teams the two last years. Mitchell was also honored as member of the 2018-2019 NABC Honors Court and was named to the Empire 8 Presidents' List.

Sage is back in action on November 12 hosting Purchase College at 7 p.m. in Kahl Gym in a non-conference contest as the Gators hold their home opener in conjunction with Faculty Staff Appreciation Night.
