Gonzalez's double-double propels Sage past Elmira, 89-75 in Empire 8 play

Elmira, NY— The Sage Colleges' men's basketball team travelled to Elmira College on Friday night for an Empire 8 contest. The Gators had a 37-35 lead at the break and went on to earn the key league win, beating Elmira, 89-75. Sage improves to 8-10 overall and 4-5 in the Empire 8 after falling to Elmira at home on January 5.

Sage's sophomore center Joshua Gonzalez (Albany, NY/Canajoharie) collected a double-double on 21 points with 12 rebounds. Joining him in double-digit scoring on Friday night was junior Darius Denmark (Orlando, FL/Evans), with 15 points, five assists and three baskets from three-point range.

Senior forward Chris Kidd (Troy, NY/Beacon) connected for 13 points with six rebounds, while graduate player Frane Larose (Miami, FL/North Miami Beach Senior) added 10 points with six rebounds and six assists.

Rookie Deonte Sherwood (Orange Park, FL/Oakleaf) collected a career-high with eight points off the bench for the Gators. Sage shot 57.1% from three-point range in the second half (4-7) and made 20-of-23 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Sage had a commanding edge on the boards, holding Elmira to only 33 on the night, while collecting 49 rebounds including 28 defensive rebounds.

Sage is back in action on Saturday, January 26 at Hartwick College for a 4 p.m. league contest.
