Scurry leads 62-53 Sage win over Castleton

Albany, NY— Junior guard/forward Isaiah Scurry (Albany, NY/Albany) scored a game-high 16 points to lead The Sage Colleges to a 62-53 non-league men's basketball victory over Castleton University at Kahl Gymnasium Sunday afternoon. The Gators improved to 4-6 while the Spartans now stand 3-7.

Senior forward Chris Kidd (Troy, NY/Beacon) had 12 points and a career and game best six assists for the Gators, and sophomore forward/center Joshua Gonzalez (Albany, NY/Canajoharie) led all players with seven rebounds. Kidd's previous high was five assists last season vs. Canton. Junior guard Darius Denmark (Orlando, FL/Evans) had a game high four steals. Graduate guard Frane Larose (Miami, FL/N. Miami Beach Senior) added nine points. Sage shot 33% for the game and had a 43-41 rebounding edge on the day, including a 17-10 offensive rebounding advantage. Sage also forced 25 turnovers.

Tank Roberson led the Spartans with 14 points and four assists and Casey Belade pulled down six rebounds for the guests. Calvin Carter had a game best four blocked shots. Castleton shot 38% and made 75% of the free throw attempts.

Sage jumped out to a seven point lead at 11-4 with 5:27 into the game. The Gators held a nine point lead at 29-20 with 3:12 to play and took a 34-26 lead into the half. After a tip in by Belade tied the game at 36-36 with 15:22 to play, the Gators took the lead for good with a Scurry layup with 14:27 left in the second half. From that 15:22 mark when it was tied, Sage went on a 17-5 run in the next 6:48 for a 53-41 lead, the largest lead of the half. The Spartans never got closer than seven (60-53 with 12 seconds remaining).

Sage continues a week long home stand Friday, hosting Empire 8 rival Utica College at 7 p.m. Castleton is home Friday for a 5 p.m. contest vs. Western Conn. State.
