Gators drop heartbreaker in OT to Stevens

Albany, NY—The Sage Colleges' men's basketball team hosted the Ducks of Stevens on Tuesday night in an Empire 8 contest. After Sage tied the game with a layup at the end of regulation, the game went to overtime and Stevens collected the 81-71 win. Stevens improves to 14-4 overall and 8-1 in the league. Sage is now 7-9 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

Sage tied the action with less than 0.8 seconds left as junior center Kevin Lenehan (Delanson, NY/Duanesburg) put up a layup and sent the game to extra play with the score all tied at 64.

In the overtime, Stevens got five points from junior Ryan Coffey (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) and sophomore Spencer Cook (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Twp.) to take control of the game and cruise to the road win over Sage.

By game's end, Cook added 20 points, while Coffey had 15 points for Stevens as four players finished in double-digit scoring. Senior forward Thomas Cook (Belchertown, MA/Amherst Regional) added 11 points with eight rebounds, while junior Jayson Winick (Naperville, IL/Naperville North) added 10 points with five boards, two assists and three steals. For the game, Stevens made 20-of-29 shots from the line and had a 50-40 edge on the boards.

At the half, Sage held a 34-27 lead as senior forward Barceem Dukes (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) had eight points with three rebounds. The Gators had six first-half points from both sophomore guard Isaiah Scurry (Albany, NY/Albany) and freshman Fethener Aime (Palm Coast, FL/Flagler Palm Coast).

Stevens had a 25-23 edge on the boards in the first half of play and had seven different players figure in the scoring including Coffey, who had six points and four rebounds for the Ducks.

Sage's senior guard Jordan Devaughn (Jacksonville, FL/Flora McDonald Academy) racked up 15 points in the contest with eight assists and five steals. Lenehan added 11 points with six rebounds and a block, while Dukes collected 14 points with six rebounds and two blocks.

Sage will return to action on Friday, January 26 travelling to St. John Fisher College for a 6 p.m. league contest. Stevens is in action next on January 27 hosting Hartwick College in a 2 p.m. Empire 8 contest.
