Last second shot dooms Gators at Stevens, 73-72

Albany, NY—The Sage Colleges' men's basketball team travelled to New Jersey to take on Empire 8 opponent Stevens on Thursday evening. The host Ducks rallied from down 10 points to earn the 73-72 win. With the victory, Stevens improves to 11-3 overall and remains unbeaten at 5-0 in the league. Sage drops to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Sage led 70-58 with 5:08 left to play before the Ducks would finish the game on a 15-2 run. Stevens cut the lead to three points with 1:30 left to play as Jayson Winnick added a clutch three-pointer at 1:30 left in the action (Sage 70-67 Stevens) and then with 27 seconds left in the game made a pair of free throws to give the Ducks a 72-70 lead. Sage's junior center Kevin Lenehan (Delanson, NY/Duanesburg) hit a lay-up at 00:06 to tie the score at 72-72 for the sixth tie of the game. Sage's senior guard Wayne Weir (Bronx, NY/Samuel Gompers fouled Winnick with one second left and Winnick made his first free throw to break the tie but missed the second and senior center Barceem Dukes (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) hauled in the rebound as time expired and the Gators were unable to get a shot off.

Lenehan and sophomore guard Isaiah Scurry (Albany, NY/Albany) both finished with 16 points, while Dukes connected for 10 points with eight rebounds. Lenehan added six blocks in the contest, which ranks in a tie for the fourth most single-game blocks. Senior guard Jordan Devaughn (Jacksonville, FL/Flora McDonald Academy) added 15 points with seven assists and three steals.

Sage will return to action on January 16 travelling to Utica College for a 6 p.m. for an Empire 8 contest.
