Gators chalk up another win, downing Bears, 65-61

Albany, NY—The Sage Colleges' men's basketball team hosted the Bears of St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon for a Skyline Conference match-up. After trailing 30-25 at the half, Sage came back for the 65-61 league win, the team's third in a row to cap a 3-0 week. Now 10-7 overall and 6-2 in the Skyline Conference, Sage has won six of the squad's last seven games. SJC-Brooklyn drops to 4-12 overall and 1-7 on the league.

Sage's junior center Thiago Conceicao (El Portal, FL/Westwood Christian) led the team with his double-double on 12 points and 13 rebound with a pair of blocked shots. Junior Jordan Devaughn (Jacksonville, FL/Flora McDonald Academy) connected for 15 points with three assists and three steals.

Senior forward Rob Mills (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) tallied 16 points off the bench with four assists, five rebounds, and a pair of steals in the action. Senior Davon Sylvester (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Hayes) added seven points with seven rebounds, while senior forward Marcus Patterson (Bronx, NY/Mount Saint Michael Academy) was held to five points with six rebounds.

Patterson boasts 836 career points and ranks No. 5 all-time in scoring at Sage, while his 481 rebounds stands fourth. He is sixth with 34 blocks in 92 career games played, which stands fifth all-time for the Gators.

The Bears took a seven point lead to open the second half and led 40-33 with 16:14 left as senior guard Christian Giles (East Elmhurst, NY/Archbishop Molloy) made one of two free throws he shot. Devaughn made a run and helped Sage cut the gap and gave Sage a 46-44 lead with a three-point basket at 13:50. Sage never looked back and led by as many as eight points twice down the stretch.

Giles finished with 11 points, five rebounds five assists and a steal, while sophomore forward Aaron Parra (Brooklyn, NY/Monsignor McClancy) netted 15 points with eight boards and two blocks for the Bears. Rookie forward Kavan Meiner (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) had a double-double in the action on 13 points with 13 rebounds, including eight defensive boards as the Breas held a 50-48 edge on the boards.

Sage is back in action on January 25 travelling to St. Joseph's College-LI for a 7 p.m. Skyline Conference contest.
