Sage men make it 2 in a row with road win over Cobleskill, 80-66

Cobleskill, NY—The Gators of The Sage College' men's basketball team picked up a convincing 80-66 road win over the Fighting Tigers of SUNY-Cobleskill on Saturday afternoon. Sage improves to 4-5 overall, while Cobleskill drops to 0-10.

Sage led 35-34 at the half and pulled away mid-way through the second half as four different players finished in double-digits. Senior forward and team co-captain Marcus Patterson (Bronx, NY/Mount Saint Michael Academy) added a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds after making 7-11 from the floor. He now has 689 career points, which ranks seventh best at Sage, while adding 428 rebounds which is fifth best in 84 games played, another Sage record he continues to climb as he is now 7th as well.

Gator junior guard Wayne Weir (Bronx, NY/Samuel Gompers) led all players with 20 points after making six baskets from three-point range (6-10) and added three assists with four rebounds. Senior Davon Sylvester (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Hayes) collected 12 points with four assists, while senior Rob Mills (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) added 10 points with three steals.

After a first half which featured six ties and seven lead changes the Gators took the lead for good at the 17:53 mark of the second half at 40-39 when junior center Barceem Dukes (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) scored off a give-and-go from junior guard Weir, eventually capitalizing on a 17-for-33, 51.5%, second half shooting effort to secure the victory.

Cobleskill was led in scoring by junior guard Malik Chambers, West Point, N.Y., James I. O'Neil High School, who had 17 points on the afternoon with senior swingman Joel Costello, Middleburgh, N.Y., Middleburgh High School/Tompkins-Cortland Community College, adding 13 points. Junior center/forward Christian Cooper, Gilboa, N.Y., Gilboa-Conesville High School, was also a factor for the Orange & Black with 13 points and four rebounds. Sage combined to hold a 36-24 edge on the boards, while holding Cobleskill to just 27.8% (5-18) from three-point range.

Sage is back in action on December 30 travelling to Worcester State University for a non-conference game, the final Sage athletic event of 2016.
