This year marks the 11th year of this walk. What started as a small event with 100 participants has now grown to over 2,000 participants with a large fundraising goal of $240,000 this year. With your help we can make that happen.

About R.I.T.A.
Dr. Rita Leighton was a woman of substance. She was young, vibrant, and had much to offer the world around her. Though she waged her private battle with depression, she reached an end to her ability to cope, and in October of 2004, Rita died by suicide, leaving behind a grief-stricken partner and a devastated group of friends.

In September 2005, a walk was held in Saratoga, NY with amazing results of the grassroot efforts of a small group of people working together to raise over $28,000 for suicide prevention. In the years since that first walk, there has been an opportunity to broaden the circle to include more people who have lost loved ones to suicide, those who have survived their own suicide attempts, and those surviving the daily struggle with mental illness.

Dr. Rita's friends chose to partner with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) because of its stellar reputation and the annual Out of the Darkness Walk for R.I.T.A. is now one of the more than 300 walks across the country. In fact, in 2014 we finished as the top 6th fundraising walk in the country, raising $210,000.

Though our circle grows, Rita remains the root of our efforts.
