
Horseheads, NY – Russell Sage College's field hockey team travelled to Elmira College on Saturday for their regular-season finale with the Soaring Eagles. The Gators needed overtime but posted a 3-2 win to cap the year on a winning note for interim head coach Nick Pontari. RSC caps the year with a 2-13 overall mark having also gone 1-8 in the Empire 8.
Elmira scored first and had a 1-0 lead at the half. RSC's senior forward Alyssa Fitzgerald (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) put RSC on the scoreboard with her first of three goals as she converted a penalty stroke at the 35:15 mark. Elmira took the 2-1 lead before Fitzgerald struck again and sent the game to overtime deadlocked at 2-2.
By game's end, she had her first career hat trick and tied the record for the most goals in a game and ranks No. 2 for most points in a game with 6.
On the season, she led the Gators with a personal-best seven goals and 16 points. She was the team's leading scorer for the second straight year and wraps her career with 12 goals, 4 assists and 28 points. She stands No. 4 all-time in points, No. 4 in goals and tied for first with four game-winning goals, and No. 6 in career assists.
In goal for the Gators, rookie Jaia Caron (Bellows Falls, VT/Bellows Falls Union) made 12 saves in earning the win to finish her first collegiate season with a 2-6 mark.
