Houghton sneaks past Sage field hockey team, 3-2

Houghton, NY—Sage's field hockey team travelled to Houghton College for an Empire 8 match on Saturday afternoon. The host Highlanders escaped with a 3-2 come from behind win to improve to 6-10 overall and 3-3 in the league. The loss puts Sage at 7-10 overall and 0-6 in the Empire 8.

Houghton got on the scoreboard first with a goal at 23:14 from Katherine Manley. Sage's sophomore Charity Rushinski (Shushan, NY/Salem Central) tied the match with a goal at 44:55. Sophomore Sara O'Connor (Rexford, NY/Niskayuna) added the go ahead goal at 50:59 for her team-leading 15th goal of the season.

Houghton tied the game at the 58:39 mark as Caitlin Jennings scored on a pass from Grace McBride. One minute later, Jennings came up with the game-winner on a pass from Hannah Daniels at 59:39 with just 21 seconds left in regulation to preserve the E8 win for the Highlanders.

Houghton's Sarah Olandt collected the win with two saves, while Sage's sophomore goalkeeper Abigayle Greier (Elma, NY/Iroquois Central) made 4 saves but took the loss and is now 6-910 this season.

O'Connor continues to add to her Gator career record standings as she now has 48 career points on 19 career goals with 10 assists. Rushinski is right behind her with her 41 career points on 15 goals with a career-record 11 assists for the young Sage program.

Sage will be back in action on October 29 travelling to Westfield State University for 7 pm contest with the Owls.
