Hartwick downs Sage field hockey, 5-1

Albany, NY—Freshman forward/midfielder Sydney Gagnon (Chestertown, NY/North Warren Central) scored two goals and sophomore forward Katie Meuse (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) had a goal and three assistst to lead Hartwick College to a 5-1 Empire 8 field hockey win over The Sage Colleges at the University at Albany's Alumni Field Wednesday night. The Gators stand 7-9 overall and 0-5 in the Empire 8, while Hartwick improved to 10-5 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

Freshman midfielder Leah Tolley (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) and sophomore midfielder/defender Rebecca Peakes (West Chester, PA/Unionville) scored one goal each for Hartwick, which had a 24-8 shot advantage and 15 of the 18 corners. Junior goalkeeper Allyson Osborne (Nottingham, PA/Solanco) made five saves in the visiting net.

Sophomore forward Sara O'Connor (Resford, NY/Niskayuna) scored the goal for the Gators, her 14th of the season. It was assisted by sophomore midfielder/forward Kathryn Gallagher (Hudson Falls, NY/Hudson Falls) and came at 42:36 to make it a 3-1 game at that point. Sophomore goalkeeper Abigayle Greier (Elma, NY/Iroquois Central) made 10 saves for the Gators.

The Hawks led 2-0 after the first and the second quarter was scoreless. Meuse made 3-1 at 38:31 before O'Connor pulled the Gators two within two. But Hartwick opened it up with two goals just 31 seconds apart in the 55th minute en route the victory.

Sage is on the road Saturday, October 26 for an Empire 8 game at Houghton at 1 p.m. Hartwick hosts Utica for an Empire 8 game at 1 p.m.
