
Troy, NY – Freshman Beth Wagner (Middleburg, PA/Middle West) scored both goals to lead Houghton College to a 2-0 Empire 8 field hockey victory over The Sage Colleges at Harkness Field at RPI Saturday afternoon. The Highlanders improved to 3-8 overall and 1-4 in league play while the Gators fell to 2-8 and 0-4 in the league.
Houghton had a 24-0 shot advantage, including 13-0 in the first half of play. The Highlanders had 10 corners in the game. This was the first shutout win of the season for Houghton.
Houghton opened the scoring at 13:20. Wagner scored her fifth of the season with an unassisted goal. She took a ball from a crowd in front and shot it in to the left side of the cage.
The Highlanders had a great chance for insurance early in the second half. Caitlin Jennings (Vestal, NY/Vestal) was awarded a penalty stroke at 42:01 but her shot was high to the left.
Wagner scored her sixth of the season and second of the day at 48:17. She got a pass from Alexandra DeHart (Labenburg, PA/Wilmington Christian) and tucked it in close inside the left post for the 2-0 lead.
Sage freshman goalkeeper Abigayle Greier (Elma, NY/Iroquois Central) made 10 saves.
Sage is right back in action at home Sunday for a 1 p.m. Empire 8 game against Washington & Jefferson at RPI's Harkness Field. Houghton plays Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Brockport.
