Sage falls short to Elms in Field Hockey, 3-1

Troy, NY—The Sage Colleges' field hockey team hosted the Blazers of Elms College on Wednesday night at RPI's Harkness Field in a non-conference match-up. Elms earned the 3-0 win to collect their first win on the season. The Blazers are now 1-4, while Sage is now 1-2.

Elms struck first at 5:03 as sophomore Carissa Ramirez (San Diego, CA) scored the first goal of the night. Ramirez took ball through traffic at midfield, got away from the pack and broke in alone past defenders shot in her goal from about seven yards out.

The Blazers scored again at 22:33 as Ramirez fed the ball to senior forward Madison Messier (Warren, MA/Quaboag Regional). The Blazers scored off a corner to Ramirez as she passed to her right for the shot from Messier.

After holding a 2-0 lead at the half, Elms tacked on another goal in the second half as junior Madison Gabel (Agawam, MA/Agawam) scored on the assist from Messier at 54:25.

Sage's rookie Kathryn Gallagher (Hudson Falls, NY/Hudson Falls) put the Gators on the scoreboard with her second goal of the season. She scored at 66:58 on a pass from freshman Charity Rushinski (Shushan, NY/Salem Central).

Gallagher had a chance to score earlier in the half, as she came in close with a shot on the right side post with 12:41 left to play and Elm's keeper made a kick save.

Sage's rookie goalie Abigayle Greier (Elma, NY/Iroquois Central) made one save in the action and drops to 0-2 in goal. For Elms, senior goalie Jillian Lapponese (Enfield, CT/Enrico Fermi) posted two saves with no goals allowed in 53 plus minutes. She shared time with rookie Nora Newman (Woburn, MA/Woburn Memorial) who had one save with one goal allowed in 17 plus minutes in net.

Sage is back in action on September 15 hosting Utica College at RPI's Harkness Field in a 1 p.m. Empire 8 match. Elms College hosts Sewanee on Saturday, September 15 at 1 p.m.
