Espinal grand slam not enough as Gators fall to Brockport

Albany, NY – Russell Sage College's baseball team hosted the Golden Eagles of Brockport State on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match up as RSC's head coach Nick Pontari took on his alma mater. Pontari's Gators made a late game rally including a grand slam by sophomore Brendan Espinal (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) in the bottom of the ninth inning. Brockport (16-9) escaped with a 13-7 win. RSC drops to 10-16 overall.

Brockport jumped out to a 1-0 lead before the Gators got a lead-off triple in the bottom of the seventh from sophomore Christian Brown (Troy, NY/Troy) and he was driven in by sophomore Jacob Coonan (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) doubled to left to  up the middle to drive in Brown. Sophomore Jared Russell (Colonie, NY/Colonie) had an RBI single to drive in Coonan and put RSC on the scoreboard.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Espinal went deep for his first RSC home run of the year and helped RSC get within striking distance as they tacked on five runs in their last at-bats. Espinal finished the day with four RBI's after going 2-for-5 at the plate with a run scored. Brown was 2-for-3 with a run scored as RSC combined for 11 hits in the contest.

Left handed pitcher sophomore Liam Doyle (West Sayville, NY/Connetquot) took the loss and falls to 3-5 as the Gators used 13 pitchers in the contest.

RSC takes on Medaille University in an Empire 8 series on April 15-16 on the road.
