RSC Goes Extra Innings to Secure Walk-off Win

TROY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College went extra innings to secure an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader sweep of visiting Houghton on Friday at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. The Gators (10-19/6-6 E8), which took three-out-of-four games from the Highlanders, erased a single-run deficit in both the eighth and ninth innings, before walking things off in the tenth.

Freshman right-hander/catcher Dylan Scherillo (Drums, PA/New Dorp) concluded the 7-6 victory with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring freshman pitcher/infielder Liam Doyle (West Sayville, NY/Connetquot), who began the frame with a walk.

Freshman outfielder Jacob Coonan (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored, while freshman outfielder Diego Jimenez (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe Woodbury) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

RSC came back to defeat Houghton 4-2 in the opener.

After the Highlanders (10-20/3-9 E8) put across their two runs in the top of the first, freshman infielder Christian Brown (Troy, NY/Troy) got the Gators on the board in the third with a two-out double.

In the fourth, RSC capitalized upon a Houghton miscue to take the lead via two unearned runs. Jimenez singled home freshman infielder Frank Colletta (Holtsville, NY/St. John The Baptist) for an insurance run in the fifth.

The extra marker appeared to be vital in the sixth, as Houghton loaded the bases with one out. Doyle escaped the jam with a strikeout and a fly out to not permit a run.

The Highlanders continued to pressure RSC, loading the bags in the seventh, this time with nobody down. Sophomore right-hander William Simkin (Canberra, Australia/Canberra Grammar) induced a pair of fly outs and whiffed a Highlander to save the victory.

Doyle, who earned the win (3-2), fanned seven batters in his 6+ innings of work.

RSC, on a three-game winning streak, is scheduled to play next on Wednesday at SUNY Brockport. First pitch is set for 3:30 PM.

Notes: Freshman infielder Andrew Knapp (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) slashed .368/.526/.455 across six games this week. The rookie recorded eight RBI and scored four runs as the Gators went 4-2.
