Baseball splits with SUNY-Cobleskill on Wednesday afternoon

Oneonta, NY---Russell Sage College's baseball team played their first games in New York on Wednesday afternoon as they took on SUNY-Cobleskill in a pair of non-conference games held on the campus of Oneonta State. The Fighting Tigers took the first game 10-4, while the Gators took the nightcap, 4-1.

RSC is now 2-8 on the year, while Cobleskill moves to 4-3.

Cobleskill led 7-1 before the Gators had a four-run top of the fourth inning, but could not overcome the Fighting Tigers' early lead.

RSC's rookie Christian Brown (Troy, NY/Troy) had an RBI single in the fourth, while sophomore Sean Berry (Tivoli, NY/Red Hook) added his first career homerun, a two-run shot to cap the inning for the Gators. Freshman Frank Colletta (Holtsville, NY/St. John the Baptist) was 3-for 3 with a double. 

Right handed freshman pitcher Michael Karpinski (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Springs) worked two innings, allowing two earned runs off a hit with a pair of walks as he took the loss, dropping to 0-3. Graduate Cameron Anderson (Clifton Park, NY/Burnt Hills) and rookie Colby Phelps (Troy, NY/Tamarac) each worked two innings in relief.

In the night cap, RSC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to own a 3-0 lead before Cobleskill scored their lone run in the bottom of the third inning.

Offensively, RSC combined for nine hits as sophomore Alex Andrew (Port Washington, NY/Paul D. Schreiber) and rookie Joe Salerno (White Plains, NY/White Plains) both doubled. Rookie outfielder Zachary Figueras (Aopoka, FL/Windermere) drove in two runs and was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Colletta was 2-for-4 as well, while rookie centerfielder Jacob Coonan (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored with a stolen base.

Rookie Liam Doyle (West Sayville, NY/Connetquot) and Andrew each drove in runs for the Gators in the action.

Junior pitcher Will Simkin (Canberra, Australia/Canberra Grammar) worked the complete game in earning the victory as he moves to 1-1. He scattered six hits in seven innings of work with six strikeouts and an earned run.  

Looking ahead, the Gators are scheduled to play a pair of games at RPI on Friday, March 18 commencing at 2 p.m.
