Mills to step down as field hockey coach

Albany, NY — Russell Sage College's director of athletics Sandy Augstein-Collins has announced that Tamara Mills will be stepping as head field hockey coach and assistant recreation director, effective September 2, 2022 as she plans to pursue a career outside of coaching. A national search will commence to find a new coach for the Gator field hockey program.

"We are so thankful to Tamara for her contributions and successes as our both our head field hockey coach and assistant director of recreation," commented Augstein-Collins. She added, "We wish her continued success as she begins a new challenge professionally."

Mills (Hopkinton, Massachusetts) was named the program's second head coach in the summer of 2019, led the young squad to a highly successful campaign in her first season.  Over the course of the campaign, she guided the Gators to an 8-11 overall performance, nearly doubling the team's wins from the previous season. She also helped Sage collect an Empire 8 win along the way after a 1-6 finish on the 2019 campaign. Sage also had three players honored by the Empire 8 as well. The Gators did not compete in 2020-2021 due to Covid-19, but did return to the field in the fall of 2021 and finished the Empire 8 campaign with a mark of 2-6, while going 4-13 overall. The Gator field hockey team has also had several players honored for academic success during her tenure with numerous players earning awards from the Empire 8 as well as the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.

Associate Director of Athletics, Jim Lyons will serve as the contact for the sport until a new head coach is selected. He can be reached at lyonsj2@sage.edu or by phone at (518) 292-1757.
