Tironi and Sopchak earn Skyline Sportsmanship Honors

New York, NY –Senior women’s basketball player Sara Tironi (Cambridge, NY/Cambridge Central) and men’s basketball senior Jacob Sopchak (Rhinebeck, NY/Rhinebeck) were both named to the 2014-2015 Skyline Conference Winter All-Sportsmanship Team.  A total of 30 student-athletes have been named to the Skyline All-Sportsmanship Teams for the 2014-15 Winter sports season, it was announced today. 

The honorees are now eligible to receive the 2014-15 Male & Female Sporting Awards, which will be voted on by the conference’s directors of athletics at the conclusion of the academic year. 

“I commend these student-athletes for demonstrating good sportsmanship and serving as an example throughout the season,” says Skyline Conference Commissioner Linda Bruno.

“Sportsmanship is an integral component of the Skyline mission and it is my privilege to recognize these individuals for their sincere appreciation of the athletic experience."

Sopchak, a senior tri-captain for the Gators has a 5.1 ppg average with a 4.5 rpg average. He has 115 career blocks as the Gators' all-time leading shot blocker and has a league-best 52 blocks this season. He is part of the Skyline Conference Championship Team and has been instrumental in the success of the gators as they will open NCAA tournament play on Friday, competing against Amherst College at 5:30 p.m. on the campus of St. John Fisher College (Rochester, NY).

Tironi, a team captain for the women’s team, has also been a tremendous leader for this year’s record-setting team. She is the second leading scorer as she has a 9.1 ppg average, while connecting for 6.5 rpg. She has amassed 622 points and 425 rebounds in her three years as a Gator. She is No. 11 all-time in career rebounding and owns an impressive 46.6% career FG% (222-476), while shooting 75.5% on her career from the free throw line as well.

The Sage women’s team is 18-7 and earned a spot in the Skyline Conference and ECAC Division III Metro Tournament. The Gators will take on Brooklyn College on Saturday, March 7 in the semifinals at Brooklyn College with a game time still to be determined.
