Sage fall student-athletes reap honors from Skyline Conference

Troy, NY---The Sage Colleges fall athletic teams were well represented with the announcement of the first Skyline Conference Weekly Players and Rookies of the Week releases.

In women’s tennis, Sage’s junior captain Mackenzie Riley (Albany, NY/Albany) was named the Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.  She opened the season on an impressive note as she was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Bay Path’s senior Sarah Costa, who went a perfect 11-0 last season. Riley teamed at first doubles with junior Isabella Pericone (Scotia, NY/Burnt Hills), but were beaten 8-6 by Costa and sophomore Symone Watson.

Men’s soccer midfielder, rookie Gustavo Trinidad (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) was selected as the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week after a pair of goals and three assists in his first week of collegiate play. He added three assists in one contest to establish a new high-water mark for a single contest.

Midfielder and newcomer Jose Miranda (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) earned a spot on the weekly honor roll after adding a goal and an assist in a 2-2 tie with Hunter and then connecting on another assist as Sage downed Colby-Sawyer, 4-3.

Men’s cross country newcomer Sean Alvarado (Shokan, NY/Onteora) picked up Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week after his impressive finish at the Wildcat Invitational. Alvarado picked up 30th place in 22:40 and was the team’s top finisher as he helped the Gators to a 10th place team finish.

In women’s volleyball, freshman outside hitter Helen Putriment (Troy, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week. In addition, she was honored with a selection to the All-Tournament Team at Hamilton College Invitational after averaging 3.08 kills per set with an attacking percentage of .206. She added a double-double against SUNY-Canton with 15 kills and 27 digs.

Senior defensive specialist Kelsey Wilson (Schenectady, NY/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) earned a spot on the honor roll after a huge start to the season. The 2010 Skyline Conference Second Team All-Star, racked up 93 digs, good enough for a 7.15 digs per set average and vaulted into the No. 3 spot on Sage’s career dig list with her 1,285 digs.

Sage’s senior women’s soccer forward Rebecca Marszalek (Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley) earned a spot on the weekly honor roll after scoring a pair of goals as Sage opened the 2011 season with a 3-0 win over Cazenovia College in the lone contest of the week. Marszalek is closing in on becoming Sage’s career goal scoring leader and point leader. She has 45 goals, 99 points and 14 career game-winning goals, all second in their respective categories for Sage women’s soccer history.                                -30-
