Sage places 31 on Skyline Spring-Winter Scholar-Athlete Team; Two Gators named S-A of the Year

New York, NY--- The Sage Colleges department of athletics has placed 31 student-athletes on the 2012 Skyline Conference All-Academic Honor Roll for the Winter and Spring Team.  The academic honor roll is comprised of all student-athletes, who have earned a 3.30 GPA or better in the spring semester. In addition, a Scholar-Athlete of the Year in each sport is awarded to the All-Skyline Conference performer, who carries the highest Grade Point Average for the spring semester. Sage produced a pair of Scholar-Athletes of the Year in two sports this spring, men’s volleyball and softball.

Sage’s sophomore men’s volleyball performer Dylan Krowicki (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) was named the Men’s Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. This year he helped lead the Gator volleyball program to a school-record 17 wins, while also garnering the team’s third consecutive Skyline Conference Tournament appearance.

Krowicki was placed on the 2012 Skyline Conference Men’s Volleyball All-Star Second Team and finished the season as the kills leader with 318. He added 14 aces with 188 digs and 29 total blocks on the season, while also ranking nationally in two NCAA Division III statistic categories. He was 18th in kills per set (3.36), while also boasting a No. 47 ranking in hitting percentage with his .267 attack percentage.

Named the Skyline Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in Softball, junior outfielder and  pitcher Rachel Smith (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) was also cited by the league. Earlier this month, she was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America ® Softball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.  She becomes to the first Sage student-athlete to earn this distinction.

On her 2012 season, she penned her name to Sage single-season records for home runs (9), at-bats (169), and runs scored (43). She is also a record holder as this year’s team has played in more games than any other Sage squad with 46 appearances to her credit. For the year, Smith batted .363 with 58 hits, including 12 doubles, one triple and nine home runs. She drove in 39 RBI’s with a. 619 slugging percentage. She also turned a strong performance as a Sage pitcher in 2012. She went 13-8 with a team-best 2.52 ERA in 111 innings of work with a personal-best 78 strikeouts. She hit successfully in all but five games this season and had 11 games with multiple RBIs, including a personal-best five RBIs in the Gators’ 16-2 win over Skidmore. She was named to the 2012 Skyline Conference All-Star First Team, while helping Sage produce a school-record 29 wins as well as a pair of runner-up trophies after participating in both the Skyline Conference Softball Championship and the Eastern College Athletic Conference Metro NY-NJ Championship.

Overall on the 2011-2012 academic year, Sage produced 63 Skyline Conference Scholar-Athletes, while three individuals were named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year in their respective sports as senior men’s golfer Dan Schulz (Broadalbin, NY/Broadlbin-Perth) was named the Men’s Golfer Scholar-Athlete of the Year this past fall.
